Store Bought vs. Homemade: StockIt’s Sunday morning, and its time to head to the grocery store! There are numerous items that you can find that do make our lives easier; for example, ready made meals, pasta sauce, marinades etc. Sure, all of these products do make cooking easier and more efficient. However how good are store bought items? verses something that you can pretty much make yourself at home that would be healthier and cheaper? Stock – a basic ingredient used in many cuisines and surprisingly very easy to make yourself. Store bought stock usually contains are ridiculous amount of sodium as well as saturated fat. Consuming a large amount of both can lead to health issues such heart disease, high cholesterol and stroke. By making stock yourself you are able to control these factors and make it to your preference. All you need to make your own stock is: A large pot 2 large white onions 2 large carrots 2-3 stalks celery 4-5 cloves 2 large bay leaves Stock is so easy since there is so little preparation involved. Start by chopping the onions in half and poking the cloves into each half. Roughly peel and chop the carrots. Wash the celery well and break into half. Throw everything in the pot and add enough water to cover all the vegetables [roughly 32 ounces is a good number, depending on the size of the pot] Season this well with a good pinch of salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Leave this to boil for about an hour and the job’s done!
